There was a beautiful mountain namedTrikuta.The waves of the ocean lapped at the foot of Trikuta. Therewerethick forests on the mountain. And in the forests there livedaking of elephants named Gajendra. He ruled over all theotherelephants in the herd.One day Gajendra was playing with his family & friends,theother elephants in a lake in the forest. Suddenly, a crocodilethatlived in the pond caught Gajendra by his leg. Gajendra, inspite ofbeing an Elephant could not break free. He then, called outforhelp. All his friends, the other elephants gathered around himandtried to help, but in vain. The crocodile was stronger than alltheelephants put together. They gave up. Gajendra tried for alongtime to escape from the crocodile. He trumpeted until hewashoarse. The crocodile simply would not let go.Gajendra Moksha – Elephant Kings’ total SurrenderThe elephant and the crocodile struggled for a thousand years.Whena thousand years over, the elephant began to tire, althoughthecrocodile’s strength was still undiminished. Gajendra lost a lotofblood and he became very weak. He finally realized that onlyGodcould help him and called out to Lord Narayana.The elephant started to pray to Lord Vishnu. Lord VishnuheardGajendra’s cries for help and appeared on his vehicle, Garuda.Hesent the Sudarshana Chakrawhirling down. The Chakra killedthecrocodile and set Gajendra free. Gajendra offered Lord NarayanaaLotus and thanked him for saving his life.Strange as it may seem, the crocodile then adopted the form ofaGandharva. His name was Huhu. He had been cursed by a sage thathewould become a crocodile. And the sage had told him that hewouldbe freed from the curse by Lord Vishnu. That had now happened.Infact. the elephant had earlier also been a kingnamedIndradyumna.And he had been cursed by a sage that he would beborn as anelephant. Indradyumna too was freed from his curse andbecameVishnu’s companion.
